Induction Seminar for New Student Leaders at Dar es Salaam Campus
During the first quarter, the Directorate of Student Services at the Dar es Salaam campus organized an induction seminar for newly elected student leaders. Held on 26th July 2024, the seminar saw the participation of 67 leaders, including cabinet members, members of the judicial organ, electoral commission members, parliamentarians, and ministry secretaries. The seminar was officiated by Prof. Emmanuel Munishi, the Deputy Rector responsible for Planning, Finance, and Administration.
In his inaugural speech, Prof. Munishi provided an insightful overview of leadership, defining the role of a leader within the context of student governance. He outlined key leadership traits, such as having a clear vision, creating achievable plans, making timely decisions, ensuring fairness, initiating and managing change, and inspiring and motivating others.
Prof. Munishi emphasized the crucial responsibilities of student leaders, noting that they serve as a vital bridge between the student body and the college management. He stressed that their role includes representing students on platforms such as the College Academic Board and the Students’ Affairs Committee.
He also urged the leaders to familiarize themselves with the CBESO Constitution to avoid assuming responsibilities that do not fall under their remit. Further, he highlighted the importance of good communication and warned against treating leadership as a personal venture. He advised student leaders to balance their leadership duties with their academic responsibilities, as both are significant aspects of their college experience.
In addition, Prof. Munishi reminded the leaders that the college will be celebrating its 60th anniversary in January 2025 and that preparations for the celebration have already begun. He emphasized the role of CBESO leaders in these preparations, encouraging them to incorporate the 60th-anniversary theme into their activities and to mobilize their fellow students to actively participate in the planned celebratory events.
Following his address, the seminar continued with several presentations from various facilitators, as outlined in the Table below.
