Awareness seminar on stress management and Mental health

During the third quarter, the Directorate of Students’ Services organized at Dodoma campus an Awareness seminar on Stress Management and Mental Health. The seminar was held on 21st March 2025. The mental health session was facilitated by Dr. David Sylvester David a Psychiatric specialist from Mental Health National Hospital Mirembe, Dodoma.

Among others, the contents for the mental health session covered:

  • Understanding Mental Health Problems – Causes, symptoms, and impact, particularly in a college setting.
  • Treatability of Mental Health Issues – Emphasizing that mental health problems are manageable with proper care.
  • Referral for Treatment – Encouraging those affected to seek medical attention.
  • Peer Support – Equipping participants with knowledge to assist fellow students in accessing mental health care.

The stress management session was facilitated by Ms. Martina Marcel, Lecturer, CBE, and the following topics were covered:

  • Definition of Stress – A physical, mental, and emotional response to difficult events.
  • Causes of Stress – Common triggers in academic, social, and personal life.
  • Types of Stress – Acute, episodic, and chronic stress.
  • Effects of Stress – Impact on physical health, mental well-being, and daily functioning.

Stress Management Techniques – Practical strategies such as time management, relaxation exercises, and mindfulness.
