Speaking at the 3rd International TAFORI Scientific Conference held from December 11th–13th, 2024, at the AICC, Arusha, Dr. Mramba presented his research titled "Towards Formalizing Wood Charcoal Businesses in Tanzania: An Exploratory Investigation."
🔎 Key Insights:
Energy Dependence:
Over 95% of urban households rely on charcoal for their energy needs.
Employment:
The sector employs more than 2 million people nationwide.
Challenges:
Despite its significance, the sector remains highly informal and unregulated, leading to:
↪ Loss of government revenue.
↪ Limited recognition and access to finance and social services for traders.
↪ Environmental issues like deforestation and contribution to climate change.
📢 Dr. Mramba emphasized that formalizing this critical sector is essential to maximize its economic potential, ensure sustainability, and address pressing environmental concerns.
