SEMINAR ON MENTAL HEALTH AND SUICIDE PREVENTION

The Directorate of Students Services under the leadership of Head of Counselling and Health Services, Ms. Farida Shemweta, organized an insightful seminar on Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, aimed at equipping students with crucial knowledge on this important issue. The seminar was facilitated by Ms. Sophia Sanga from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), a mental health expert and it was held at The CBE Main Campus.

The session focused on understanding mental health, in general and how poor mental health can negatively impact how we think, feel, and behave, affecting daily activities, relationships, and productivity.

Shocking statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) reveal that every 40 seconds, someone dies by suicide, amounting to approximately 800,000 deaths annually. Young people aged 14-29 are at the highest risk, with males being twice as likely as females to take their own lives. Suicide does not happen in isolation—it is influenced by biological, psychological, cultural, environmental, and social factors, such as depression, trauma, financial struggles, and lack of emotional support.

The session also highlighted the stigma surrounding mental health, which often prevents individuals from seeking help. Many people suffer in silence due to fear of judgment, cultural beliefs, or lack of awareness. It was emphasized that mental health is just as important as physical health, and seeking help should be encouraged rather than stigmatized.

Additionally, students learned how to identify warning signs, including sudden withdrawal, extreme mood changes, feelings of hopelessness, and talking about death or self-harm. The discussion also covered practical ways to support someone in distress, such as active listening, encouraging professional help, and creating a safe space for open conversations.
